Snappy

We went to see a baseball game in Beloit, Wisconsin– the Beloit Snappers. Their mascot is a snapping turtle. Now I recall the alligator snapper they had at Brookfield Zoo. He was a little slice of the Paleozoic Era, with these evil jaws that could nip off a hand, no problem. The Snappers’ mascot is Snappy:

I like a good mascot, but I’m not real fond of this one. The head is OK, I guess, though the eyes aren’t expressive enough (the pupils are too big, IMO). But the body’s an afterthought; too small, with tiny little arms and legs. And he seems a little off-balance.

So I decided to sketch Snappy’s nasty cousin. And I colored it for your viewing pleasure:

Now that’s a badass mascot! Beloit Snappers, the ball’s in your court… outfield, whatever.

My Dad

Let me introduce my dad. He aspired to be a cartoonist when he was a young man, and developed a good deal of skill at it. Though he only published a couple of panel cartoons, he continued scribbling long into adulthood, which in turn inspired me in this humble effort.

I think he had a good design sense. Here’s a piece he did as a teen:

Calamity

I’ve been sort of laid up with some kind of strange flu; cramps, fever, and digestive problems, but no respiratory involvement, thank goodness. I hope to take a break and get a buffer built up. In the meantime, I think I’ll mooch off my family.

This picture was drawn by my son, who is presently in Madrid blowing trumpet with his school band.Watching me draw once cracked him up, much like I did when watching my dad draw. I don’t think he’s going to pursue cartooning (who really knows?), but he’s got some talent.

Xmas Present

For Xmas, I gave my wife a henley shirt with a portrait of our crazy dog on it. Here’s the portrait:

Rolo

This is Rolo. She is crazy

I redrew this on the shirt in fabric paint. I think it turned out well. Here’s how she– my dog, not my wife– looks in Objective Reality:

Rolo, our cattle dog mix, relaxing

Trust me, she is crazy.

In truth, she is a sweetie, but she doesn’t like strangers. Good likeness though, no? I’m thinking of doing a color version.

Memorial Day

Pictured below is a sketch I did of of ordnance loader 2nd class Cpl Morton Carbunkle, ret’d; formerly with the 32nd hovertank battalion serving during the third Oil War, Malaysian Theater. He’s in his “adventurin’ outfit”. That’s his old army uniform, and he’s holding a Chinese copy of a Mauser C96, which he liberated from a partisan, or so he claims. The gun is probably older than he is. Probably.

On this Memorial Day, take a moment to give a thought to all those members of  our Armed Forces who gave their lives in service to this country.

"I'm ready!"

Lock 'n load!
